The Biometric Barrier

As we have explored in the "Surveillance Cabin" series, AI is obsessed with identification and control. A new trend in the industry is the use of biometric ignition—facial recognition and fingerprint scanning—to replace the physical key. While this is marketed as "seamless security," it represents the end of the communal nature of the automobile. A physical key is a symbol of trust; you can hand it to a friend, a family member, or a neighbor. A biometric lockout, managed by a corporate AI, turns the car into a locked-down asset that only "authorized users" can operate.

This mirrors the "Privacy Lockouts" and "Digital Gatekeeping" my classmates have seen in other software sectors. If the AI fails to recognize your face because of lighting, a new pair of glasses, or a minor injury, you are locked out of your own property. More importantly, it gives the manufacturer total control over who is "allowed" to drive your car. This isn't security; it’s a digital leash. The freedom to hand someone your keys and say "take the car" is being replaced by a biometric barrier that ensures the corporation—not the person whose name is on the title—is the true owner of the vehicle.
